This was the clearest set of questions providing good, clear results with a high number of completed options. Not all of the questions were completed by every respondent, but the lowest in this section was for 'Madrigal' where 98 of the 111 people entered a response. Note that the percentages shown are based on the number of respondents for each question.
Everyone answered the question on classical music with no-one disliking it!
There was one minor issue with this section in that the planned question of "Music from 'Modern' Composers" was removed during the design process. This was intended to pair up with the "Music from 'Classical' Composers" question. So the relevance of the remaining question was reduced and caused some confusion.
More than a third of you enjoy every music style listed in the survey.
It was reassuring to note that 95% enjoy classical music, with 86% enjoying 'classical' composers. Even the lowest values are not too extreme with 36% enjoying Madrigal and 44% enjoying Folk music.
Less than a quarter of respondents disliked any style within the list, with around 20% disliking Folk, Madrigal, Jazz, Brass Band & Military Band.
Without asking further questions it is difficult to know if these figures suggest that those people would dislike an entire evening of such styles. It has been noticed, by several committee members, that the occasional Jazz piece, for instance, included in an evening has been well received.
As indicated above, asking these questions does start to raise new questions. Unfortunately, the whole survey process is quite demanding on everyone's time & resources. Perhaps having documented the results for this survey more detailed thought can be put into the next one in a few years time.
We have, recently, received one complaint about the presence of a Military Band in this season's series of concerts. Plus there has been a drop in membership this year. However, it is difficult to infer from this that the events are linked in any way. Perhaps we will find out next season, when no Military Band is planned.
